ELL (readingrockets) website

http://www.readingrockets.org/article/417
Hi everyone! Check out this website. It is about teaching language learners ways to read. Not only have I used this website to find more information on teaching ELL, but I have also used it for other Education classes. It has some really good articles on different ways of teaching children to read. The site can be used by both educators and/or parents.

This website contains a great deal of useful information to teachers as well as parents. It has several articles directly focused on ELL. I read one titled recommendations for teaching reading to ELLS. This article states that knowing how to speak English makes it easier for students to learn how to read English. I agree with this. You need to take things one step at a time or else the student will get overwhelmed and frustrated. The article also mentioned that there is evidence that initial reading instruction in a child's home language (e.g., Spanish) makes a positive contribution to literacy attainment (both in the home language and in English) and, presumably, to the prevention of reading difficulties. I found this to be interesting and it made me want to read on to the rest of the article. The article contains a list of recommendations for teachers to use when teaching ELL students. I read through them and found them to be very useful.
