This blog I feel is very useful to any teacher, not just us participating in Junior Field. Adrian has excellent ideas which a teacher could implement at anytime in a classroom. Adrian’s ideas involve the use of technology which is an ever growing resource in the classroom, country, and world. With that said, this blog also has the ability to be taught to any student, given that the student can read English. A student does not have to be able to speak English fluently to participate. Adrian uses games, arts and crafts, as well as creativity to enrich learning in the classroom and this is something that every teacher should put into practice. When teaching, it’s important to remember to try and include every student. They might not all get the same out of each lesson, due to the fact that every students learns at a different pace, however each student needs to be taught to give each and every one the best education possible.
This resource would be especially useful for a field student or a new teacher for many reasons. First, I think it is beneficial to involve students in technology through as many ways as possible. Too often students think of the computer as a place to email their friends and instant message, instead of a resource to enhance their learning. Within this resource, I particularly liked Adrian Bruce’s encouragement for student blogging sites. By allowing students the opportunity to converse with their peers, a teacher may see an increase in a student’s classroom involvement and interest in the topics being discussed. Also, students are able to develop their technology skills and help each other feel comfortable using this type of technology, promoting a student-centered classroom environment. Since I will be teaching language arts, I found the online magnetic poetry sites to be a helpful way for teachers to engage their students in poetry writing, a topic many students want to avoid. However, this resource provides step-by-step instructions for students to follow in order to create a poem. Similarly, since most middle school students enjoy talking about themselves, they can create a poem focused on their strengths to promote self-esteem. I also found the teachers’ comments to be helpful because they described techniques and activities that did and did not work for their students. Some teachers also provided other useful resource sites in their comments.
I attached the direct link to the magnetic poetry site. I think any language arts teacher will find this site useful, especially if they have less than thrilled students about to begin poetry.
Although, I am not participating in my Junior Field, yet, I still feel I will get a lot of use from this blog. I hope that when I am in my Junior Field this site will still be available. I especially enjoy the cool websites for math, since math is my academic major. Most of the time the math site found online are boring or way to easy for children but the site coolmath4kids.com seems to be fun and exciting for children. Even if I do not have the option of using a computer in my classroom I can offer the website to children who have access to a computer at home so they can get extra help outside of the classroom. I feel it is extremely important for children to practice math skills at home and I feel that this website will be an excellent way for children to do this. I can not wait until I am in the classroom and can test out to see if this website will help children with their math skills.
I agree that this blog is an excellent and useful resource. While on this site I clicked on the link for pbs.org/teachers and found a great site that would be useful for all. It includes interdisciplinary activites and related resources at many grade levels in topics that include some that might be relevant to this class. Activities are under topics such as Indigenous Cultures, Immigration, Global Population, could teach all students to accept different cultures and languages. Those on Citizenship and American Identity could expose all students to American ideals. There are also topics on specific countries, such as China, and cultural identities such as Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders. These activites could be incorporated into lesson plans. I feel that the Teacher-Toolbox is a very beneficial addition to any teacher’s collection of useful websites! Adrian Bruce offers not only her own individual blogs and creative material, but she also includes links to even more websites that can assist teachers and field experience students alike. I think that this is a great idea because it not only makes an educator’s job easier, but also shows just how important it is to gain ideas and knowledge from multiple resources rather than just limiting yourself to one. From educational software, to reading and math games, you can find it all within just the click of your mouse! I feel that this website would be particular useful in regards to teaching ELL students because it offers multi-interactive approaches to teaching. This, in turn, allows an educator the ability to seek out the best way to involve their students and simultaneously find the best approach to assisting their students’ educational endeavors. I must note that I am very thankful that Ms. Tomich has pointed out this website because I am sure to use it again!
After reviewing this website, I found it especially useful for helping vary lesson during teaching. After already finishing my Junior Field experince and getting ready to start my Senior internship this recource shows ways to brighten lessons that are usually boring. Teaching ELL students requires a variation in your lesson but most of all having visuals. Adrian reminded me that having posters around the room with key words and pictures relating to the words will help all students learn while teaching.
I was most interested in researching through the mathematic sections since I will be teaching this in the fall. This website gives activities to teach, but more importantly, online activities for students to do on thier own. This online source allows teachers to implemet techlonogy into the class, and help students with skills that will help with future experience.
Also, by adding techlonogy into lessons where computers are in the classroom can allow different teaching styles. As a future teacher, I would take advantage of the use of computers in the classroom by introducing cooperative learning groups or jigsaw teaching. The aid of technology with websites such as this shows students that the computer can be used other than ways of communicating with friends.
