Helpful Website

Here is a helpful website I found. It has a translation link on it which I found to be really neat. I was playing with it putting in random phrases and it was interesting seeing the same phrase in different languages. There is also sites for students and teachers. Put this site in your favorites! :-)

Thanks Kathryn! This site is very interesting! The link to Comparing Cultural Norms and Values expands upon, and gives information relevant to, the demonstration in class about how different gestures are percieved in different cultures.
I especially appreciated the teacher and student resources, which includes a great link to the Purdue University OWL site - which also has ESL resources for teachers, including syllabi, assignments, quizzes and games.

This website is very interesting. My favorite part of this website is the link to PIZZA Z activities. Pizzaz stands for People Interested in Zippy and Zany Zcribbling. Pizzaz is a great way to get the students to write creatively and use oral storytelling activities for beginner to advance ELL’s students. As a future theatre teacher this gives me a way to combine English into my theatre curriculum. I also like the way it gives well-organized instructions on how to teach each activity. I also added this website to my favorites.

This is a great site for not only teachers but students as well; it provides several resources that are very beneficial. There is one part of this website that is called Awareness and Understanding, which contains interesting data that I never knew before. I never realized how wide spread bilingual students are; in the 1999 - 2000 Census Summary it is shown that there are a total of 118 languages spoken by students in the Illinois public schools and 87% of these languages are represented in Chicago schools. This piece of information made me very aware of the fact that all teachers no matter where they are teaching have to be prepared for ESL students.
