Cooperative Learning

Cooperative learning is a useful tool because it requires students to interact with others as well as others in order ro accomplish different tasks. When small groups of students collaborate on a common task , they must clarify and negotiate with one another. This experience of interactive exchanges of information provides a rich language learnuing opportunity for English language learners. I agree eith this idea because I feel that students can learn from other students as well as their teachers. Sometimes it takes students working with others in order for the concept to be understood. A method mentioned in this packet is think, pair, share. My ID 2950 teacher would use this method with my class when we did partner and group work. This method requires students to think about the topic or question being askes, then find a partner, and lastly to take turns sharing each persons ideas without interupting their partner. Each partner would share all of their ideas while the other partner listened and then discussed when each person was finished. This is a really good idea because each student gets to think of something to share and then they can learn more information about the topic by discussing it with their partner.

I also agree with cooperative learning as a way of teaching. Cooperative learning involves so much social skills, I feel just by having everyone talk will be beneficial to English language learners. Also, the English language learners’ social skills become increased and soon they will become more confident in the classroom. Cooperative learning is a tool used for many different learners. The idea about listening and sharing ideas is very hard for students. This is a good experiment/activity to use to teach listening skills and other academic areas.

I also agree with the cooperative learning strategy int he classrooms. This strategy is not only valuable for classrooms containing ELL but for all classroom atmospheres. Integrating cooperative learning is beneficial for both the teacher and students for many reasons. As you guys already mentioned it allows for student interaction. During my field experience I taught a lesson that required the students to build a workign model of the muscles in the leg. I found that having cooeprative learning helped time be saved in the classroom. Since all students are on different levels of learning some students needed more assistance than others. Since the class was only 45 minutes long I could offer total individual attention to any one student. Cooperative learning allowed for students to turn to their peers and learn from each other. I also found this strategy as a great way to control the classroom. Since the students were allowed to work together it did not force them to sit silently which is difficult for many fourth graders. I found this benficial because it gave them permission to talk but they were talking about things that were relating to the lesson and not to what they were going to play at recess.
